WHO I AM
My name is Lorenzo and I'm in my mid-40s. I was born and raised in France. I'm a mechanical engineer. After my studies I moved to Germany, where I've lived for almost 20 years. I work in the aerospace industry in Hamburg. I've lived in the south of Spain for 4 years and I've travelled to several countries for holidays, such as Peru, Thailand, India, Brasil, so I think I can relate to other cultures and traditions around the world.
My mother had 7 sisters and brothers and money was tight for her when she was growing up. She instilled in me the value of money, hard work, scarcity and saving rather than over consuming, my dad was an electrician with a decent income, I am a typical middle class white European man, well educated, never missed out on anything in my life, neither love nor attention nor money.
When the Covid lockdown happened in 2020, like everyone else, I started spending a lot more time on the internet, looking for scientific presentations about climate change: How bad the situation really is and what the solutions are. I had to expand my knowledge into material science, technology, energy but also economics and the financial system. My intention was simply to find out what I could personally do about climate change.
The more I immersed myself in scientific presentations and podcasts, the more I realised that the overshoot of our planet's boundaries is absolutely unstoppable, and that the system and our human behaviour are designed to keep fossil fuels and their associated environmental impacts going. As a generalist with an analytical mind, I was able to make the link between energy, materials, pollution, economics, finance, demography and universal human psychology. I realised the true state of the world and the trouble we are in by understanding the link between climate change, economics, energy and human behaviour: The nature of capitalism to consume more to make more profit, the ultra-financialisation of capitalism to make easy money for the top 1% wealthiest, the human nature to over-consume goods and services leading to resource depletion and pollution, the debt to pump more money into the system to satisfy an ageing population, and above all the natural human behaviour and human psychology of all of us to get more comfort and strive for a better standard of living has got us into this mess.
I realised that we will continue to consume more, pollute the planet, burn fossil fuels, spend more money than we have through budget deficits. The show must go on.
And sadly, there is no single country, politician or technology that can stop this trend. We are all doomed, trapped in our own comfortable systems, unwilling to sacrifice our current standard of living for a better future.
All the propaganda from politicians and the mainstream media about energy transition, net zero by 2050, inflation below 2%, is sadly a big lie. People are blind, misinformed and ignorant. It is easier to believe in greener pastures and a brighter future without digging into the numbers that to than to admit we are doomed to civilisation collapse. Humans are naturally in a "me now" mentality, always looking for a better standard of living, regardless of the consequences elsewhere and later... This is why we use the most efficient energy to do the work for us: fossil fuels. That is why we continue to spend beyond our means: to maintain our good standard of living and to avoid sacrifices and restrictions.
This amazing standard of living we have is about to collapse. Food crops will stop growing due to drought, floods and wildfires and soon food will become very expensive. Cheap oil reserves are depleting and without abundant oil we are about to lose our purchasing power and standard of living drastically. The state is in a debt trap, soon to be unable to repay its debts, and with the public deficit out of control, there will soon be hyperinflation and drastic cuts in health, pension, social security, education, infrastructure and other public spending.
But the worst problem, with absolutely no solution and no one caring about it, is demography. The low birth rate of the last 40 years has left us with a broken pension system, a labour shortage that can only be filled by more machines, an unproductive elderly population that relies more and more on the growth of fossil fuel consumption, an unsustainable welfare system, and more developing countries doing our dirty work for us and living in miserable conditions.
I have a scientific way of thinking, I am very analytical, I try to understand causes and consequences without making assumptions about the general public, and I always got good grades at university. I like to face problems, find the causes and implement solutions. I have been very successful at solving problems in my professional and personal life. This is the first time I have been faced with a problem without a solution. All possible ideas lead to civil war, drastic loss of purchasing power, riots and catastrophic consequences for climate change. There is no solution. I would like to tell you otherwise, but there is no solution.
We are all doomed and there is nothing we can do about it.
This is our last decade of prosperity.
I am an analytic scientist and logical problem solver. Throughout my life, I have always been successful at analysing situations, defining problems, identifying root causes and solving them. Demography is the first area in my life in which I have not found a solution to a problem.
Usually, when I have an idea for a solution, I ask myself why it isn't already being implemented, because if it were a viable, pragmatic and realistic solution, it would already be in use somewhere in the world. This is how I question and reject many proposals that have side effects or a negative impact on other aspects. Looking at the demographics, I can see that none of the potential fixes are actually feasible. This is why fertility rates have plummeted across the globe for 50 years and will most likely continue to decline in the coming decades. No country or individual has found a way to prevent the impending population collapse of the industrialised world. I am no genius; I am not here to provide a magical solution. I am only here to raise awareness and provide explanations.
I have a desire to share with you my insights, my thoughts, my fears, my ultra-pessimistic vision and the truth that the mainstream media and politicians are not telling you for obvious reasons: to avoid mass panic, anarchy and to keep society under control. I will use this book to share with you the results of years of research, listening and studying scientists and specialists. I hope you can learn something and prepare for the terrible future that lies ahead.
I am a doomer, yes, but because I am a realist. I am not a depressive person. Quite the opposite: I am now fully aware of the situation and I want to enjoy the beauty of life now, before we come to a really dark time. It is as if you were sick, you went to the doctor and the doctor told you that you have cancer and that you only have 1 year to live. What would you do? Would you commit suicide immediately because this is terrible news? No! You would certainly spend time with your friends and family, travel the world, spend all your money on fun things and enjoy every bit of life like there was no tomorrow. That's exactly my point. I hope this book frees you from your fears and inspires you to make your dreams come true now.
I hope this book will change your thoughts and vision of the world. I would love to debate with you. Maybe one day I'll open a Youtube channel or a podcast with guests to have a live exchange with you. Feel free to contact me for any comments, critics or conversation.
